Vinegar, an early preservative essential to survival in China, represents the essence of life. In the picture above, three men dip their fingers in a vat of vinegar and taste it. The three men are Confucius, Buddha, and Laozi, respectively. They are the fathers of the three most prominent philosophies of China. Each man's expression represents the predominant attitude of his philosophy: Confucianism saw life as sour, in need of rules to correct the degeneration of people; Buddhism saw life as bitter, dominated by pain and suffering due to attaching possessions and material desires; and Taoism saw life as sweet due to it being fundamentally perfect in its natural state.
"From the Taoist point of view, sourness and bitterness come from the interfering and unappreciative mind. When understood and utilized for what it is, life itself is sweet. That is the message of "The Vinegar Tasters."
— Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh
A little bit of tough times is good for growth. If we don't face challenges early, how will we learn to overcome them when they become more complex? Complex social interactions, differences of opinions, and arguments are all part of life. So too, are academic hurdles. Just because something is hard does not mean it is not worth doing.
I encourage you to remind your students that a bit of struggle is part of life and equip them to face it with courage, understanding, and appreciation.
